Best beaches
Travel guide Lonely Planet highlights 13 Sri Lankan beaches that draw sunseekers and surfers throughout the year and play a vital role in marine conservation.
1 Unawatuna. Best beach overall
Just 6km from Galle, this is one of the most popular swimming beaches in Sri Lanka because an offshore reef means the sea is calm most of the year. Sun beds line the beach, while dining is sophisticated and attracts weekend beach parties.
2 Dalawella. Best beach for families
Also known as Wijaya Beach after its most popular restaurant, the beach has a lagoon protected by a reef, meaning you can swim or paddleboard here for much of the year.
3 Weligama. Best beach for beginner surfers
This is one of the best surfing beaches in Sri Lanka for beginners, while fine sand attracts families, and there are plenty of places to eat, drink and stay at every price range.
4 Kabalana. Best beach for fine dining
Kabalana feels like a more intimate alternative to Unawatuna or Weligama, part of laid-back Ahangama’s hip surf and yoga scene. After dark, the focus shifts to the excellent restaurants flanking the busy Galle-Matara road.
5 Mirissa. Best beach for whale watching
Boats depart daily during the season for half-day cruises, and whale sightings are good. You can snorkel in the bay east of Parrot Rock, surf its western reef break, take a yoga class, enjoy a scenic ramble or visit Secret Beach. Restaurants are plentiful, and evenings lively.
6 Hiriketiya. Best beach for amenities
Timber-frame restaurants, coffee shops, guesthouses and villas stretch up and over the western hill en route to neighboring Dikwella’s vast sandy bay.
7 Bentota. Best beach on the west coast
Dominated by package-holiday hotels, Bentota is famed for its combination of water sports and safe swimming.
8 Kalkudah. Best quiet beach on the east coast
Kalkudah’s profusion of coconut estates and cashew farms counterpoints this idyllic east coast beach. Word of warning: although swimming is possible here, it can be treacherous as the beach shelves steeply.
9 Arugam Bay. Best beach for surfing
Once the preserve of die-hard surfers, this east coast beach attracts budget-conscious sunseekers looking to combine surfing with visits to ancient sites and remote national parks such as Kumana and Lahugala Kitulana.
10 Nilaveli. Best beach for snorkeling and diving
Nilaveli features ivory sands, palmyra palms and roaming cattle, and Sri Lanka’s deep-sea diving and whale-watching hub. Offshore lies Pigeon Island, home to turtles and blacktip reef sharks.
11 Casuarina. Best northern beach
The northernmost Jaffna peninsula are mostly barren and unshaded, which is why tree-fringed Casuarina is so popular, despite the 40-minute drive from Jaffna.
12 Kalpitiya. Best beach for kitesurfing
Kalpitiya is a 35km peninsula bordering the Puttalam lagoon, flanked by a beach that extends to the ruined Dutch fort at its tip. Favoured during the windier, low-season months of May to September.
13 Mawella. Best beach for total relaxation
This lesser-known 2km curved bay is only 7km from Tangalla, but remains far from the madding crowd—a rare taste of southern escapism for those who plan to do very little at all!
